366 Days of Running

January 1: The car was a prison with loud noises and no way to escape. We were stuck in traffic coming back from a day of skiing. Just two miles from our cabin and we were not moving. I was wedged between my niece and nephew kicking and fighting with each other, and I was the victim of their rambunctious energy. I was sitting in the middle of what seemed to be an eternity. I needed to get out. I needed to be free from this torture. The line of cars was still stagnant so I knew what I had to do.

There are so many variables in the sport of triathlon. Knowing exactly how you’re going to operate on race day will help minimize pitfalls. Weeks before the race, I already know what I’ll be eating the day before and the morning of the race, how I’m going to pack my transition bag and what I’m going to do to recover post-race. In the weeks leading up to the competition, I like to visualize myself before, during, and after the race to set the tone mentally, and to reassure myself that I’m fully prepped for a successful day.
